Trust, the five letter word our world revolves around..but i am not here to extol upon its virtues in the makings of relationships with others, enough has been said about it over the millenia. No, i want to dwell on its virtues in its relationship with myself and in hindsight with the big, bad world of consumerism.
Lately i've been on a buying spree ( ok, forever) but i don't fit the definition of a shopaholic, quite the contrary i put enough thought and attention into where my parents' hard earned money is going ( being broke, its difficult to do the same with my own money u see) so much so that what was once a pleasurable activity has now become exhausting. In my search for the best for the least, i find myself scanning legions of manufactures, suppliers, products, warranties, delivery guys .....( you get the picture) and their reviews....heck i am even looking at reviews of reviewers to get inside their head...needless to say by the time i actually happen upon the right purchase i am ready to chuck it out of the window.
In this seemingly neurotic behavior what shines beneath the surface is my inability to trust the vendor that he'll deliver on what he promises, and it is not without a reason. In a world riddled with fake, frivolous and faux...there is greater probability of getting swindled than of finishing your morning cup of coffee.
But that said and done, i am tired of the whole charade where i need to get transcripts on each and every purveyor in the process of buying anything and everything from chickpeas to cars..
I am so envious of simpler times, when my parents could spend their own money without me bullying them on their own turf...when they trusted the local shopkeeper's word and were ready to thrash him if he didn't deliver (or atleast my papa was ..) I wonder if it's possible today in a world of detachment where there is no loyalty to the brand or brandmaker, a world of e-commerce where we don't even see the face of a vendor, much less plant one on it..
Swindlers and con-men have always been around, its an art form, definitely not indigenous to the 21st century but like everything else it has evolved, becoming a techno cult there is little escape possible from, ask the fellow who signed away his life to a website. So don't mind if still insist on reading your terms and condtitions before i put the pen to the paper but i won't worry so much next time i want chickpeas.
I remember when i was younger i'd implore my mom to lemme buy old perfumes to use as air-fresheners ( she never let me ofcourse) i think of it as a time when i was willing to place my trust on an old expired commodity cause it smelled sweet or atleast promised to, and in giving up that innocence i've probably lost the chance to smell many a roses... I think its time i allow myself to take a chance on that promise once again.
Same goes for life,we take too many precautions, we play too safe and yet life never deals us a fair hand.. let's try to trust more, ourselves and others, take risks, breathe easy and smile at the unfair hand.. the next turn in the road might make it just what you need...
Adventures beckon those who do not plan their travels, let it beckon you next time you take a leap of faith, a road less traveled.. .I am not saying you won't end up in the water ever, but you'll have a story to tell and what's life if not a string of stories well-told :)
